A PLACE WHERE POWER, PURPOSE AND PEOPLE MEET
GOSPEL TABERNACLE COMMUNITY FOOD PANTRY Gospel Tabernacle Community Food Pantry was established in July, 2011 amidst economic uncertainty and high unemployment. Our mission was to empower our community by offering opportunities and services which enrich lives, enable change and promote healthy living. Only 11 families came to receive food on our first pantry day, July 15th, 2011. Most of the clients were invited by the church members who canvassed the neighborhood inviting people to church. The good news spread fast and within 2 months, the food pantry was serving 60 families per week. Each box of food contained a written message from our Pastor and scripture for spiritual food. Most of the clients lived in the Bowin Place Apartments, a senior building around the corner. Many of the seniors testified how the pantry blessed them with more fresh fruits and vegetables than they could afford on their monthly income. As more families came to the pantry, people started to arrive earlier and earlier and the line extended down the sidewalk. We saw this as an opportunity to feed the people spiritually prior to the food distribution. Ministers from Gospel Tabernacle taught Bible Study and the attendance grew to 120+ clients. God showed us favor and Gospel Tabernacle Community Food Pantry was selected to be Forgotten Harvest’s Front Line Pantry. Individuals who contact Forgotten Harvest for food are directed to our pantry for service. In return, we are allowed to pick up food as often as necessary to accommodate the need. The number of clients continued to increase on a weekly basis, and an additional Bible Class and pantry distribution was added on Tuesday to accommodate the growing need. The following winter of 2011-2012 was brutal with colder than normal temperatures. Many of the seniors that we had come to know and loved were unable to travel to the pantry using their walkers, canes and wheelchairs. Out of love and compassion for our neighbors, we decided to deliver food to the seniors at Bowin Place Apartments. This task wasn’t easy but the experience helped us to grow as a team and increased our faith as we accomplished more than we ever thought that we could. By the end of February, 2012 we were supplying food for 175 seniors on a weekly basis. Each distribution started with a group prayer with the seniors, and individual prayer was provided upon request. At times we would received news that one of the seniors died since our last visit, and at times we have ministered last prayers to some of our neighbors. Currently, Gospel Tabernacle Community Food Pantry serves approximately 17,000 persons annually, and gives out 52,000 meals annually. We have become one of Detroit’s finest pantries in service quality, client satisfaction and most importantly transforming lives by ministering love, dignity, and respect. Gospel Tabernacle Community Food Pantry and Bible Study were named Glory Tabernacle in January 2013. Glory Tabernacle invites members of the community to be a part of the services where they can sing their song, give their testimony and inspire each other.
