A PLACE WHERE POWER, PURPOSE AND PEOPLE MEET
ROLE OF A PASTOR Part 1 It is absolutely imperative that you establish people in positions of authority in your life. The book of Hebrews 13:17 specifically states, "Obey them that have the rule over you, and submit yourselves: for they watch for your souls, as they that must give account, that they may do it with joy, and with grief, for that is unprofitable for you. Every person should be answerable to someone and accountable to someone. The man or woman who refuses to submit themselves voluntarily to spiritual authority is unwise and puts their own well being in serious jeopardy. It is the will of God that every Christian have a Pastor. God desires that all Christians have a Pastor on earth that has been anointed by the Holy Spirit, to pray for you, to counsel you, to watch for your soul, to encourage you, to minister the Word of God to you, and to be an example of holiness and godliness to you. The word shepherd comes from a Hebrew verb meaning to ‘pastor’ or ‘tend’ to a flock of sheep. Shephers are known for feeding and protecting the flock, Jeremiah 31:10 and Ezekiel 34:2. Shepherds are also known for seeking out the lost sheep, Ezekiel 34:12. Lastly, Shepherds are responsible for rescuing sheep when the sheep are being attacked, Amos 3:12. Basically the role of the Pastor is to spiritually provide for the saints, to spiritually protect the saints, to be a godly pattern for the saints, and to pursue after saints that have lost their way. The assignment that God has given his Pastors is very important and critical for your growth and development as a child of God. Our prayer should be that God will continue to have his hand upon all of his Pastors, and that they will carry out the calling that the Lord has given to them. Part 2 The Old Testament characterizes the leaders of God’s people as being undershepherds and God being the chief shepherd. In Numbers 27:17, and also in 1 Kings 22:17, the plight of God’s people was many times determined by the quality of the leadership that was over them. When the people were without leaders, or had bad leadership, the people wandered aimlessly without direction. God has always intended that his people should be led and directed through life by pastors that would receive their instructions from God and carry out God’s direction. As long as the pastor is connected to God and is being led by God, the people of God always dwell within the safety of God’s perfect will. Even as the saint should honor the voice of the pastor, so also should the pastor honor the voice of the Lord. The Apostle Paul said unto the congregation in the city of Corinth, "Be ye followers of me, even as I also am of Christ", (1 Corinthians 11:1) The congregation should be willing to follow the pastor where the pastor leads them, and to submit their will to the direction of the pastor. Likewise the pastor must be willing to follow the Lord where the Lord leads him, and to submit his will to the will of the Lord. The congregation should learn to appreciate and honor the protective covering that the pastor provides for the sheep and never take it for granted. The office and job of a Pastor was not devised by society or government but has been ordained and instituted by the Lord. God uses the pastor to help to bring the saints to spiritual maturity by empowering the pastor to give them spiritual counsel, by gifting the pastor to preach to them biblical truths, and by anointing the pastor to pray and intercede on their behalf.
